SAFETY
Yerevan can definitely be named as one of the most safe cities in the world. Walking at night through Yerevan is safer than in most European cities. A tourist, just like a local Armenian, always feels completely safe.
Traffic
Tourists usually note one disadvantage of Yerevan – its car traffic. The city was not designed for the current large number of vehicles and, hence, the Yerevan streets are often packed. Traffic jams are not of course similar to jams in the world big cities, however, the abundance of cars does not really harmonize with the cozy historical streets of Yerevan.
It is always more attractive to leave the car and just walk around.
In any case, given the “authentic” local way of driving, we kindly encourage you to always be careful while crossing streets, even on “green light”.
YandexTaxi platform is available in Armenia with possibility to pay using your attached Russian banking card.
We recommend using YandexTaxi and avoid picking up street taxis.
WATER
Armenia is well known for its mountainous water springs – potable and healthy. In any retail store you will be able to find bottles from many local producers. But there is an easier solution – open KRAN in your apartment or hotel room and drink with pleasure – it is safe and even tasty.
On top – in the streets of Yerevan you will see “pulpulak”, a little fountain with potable water. Clean and tasty water comes directly from mountainous springs.
For those who travel by car or motorcycle
You can reach Armenia by car or motorcycle only through the territory of Georgia using the following border checkpoints:
• Checkpoint “Bavra” — autoroute “Gyumri-Akhalkalaki”
• Checkpoint “Gogovan” — autoroute Е117 “Yerevan-Tbilisi”
• Checkpoint “Privolnoye”
• Checkpoint “Bagratashen” — autoroute “Yerevan-Vanadzor-Tbilisi”
Armenia implemented an APPA insurance policy – mandatory car liability insurance. APPA policy can be purchased either at the insurance agents’ offices at the border or at the insurance companies offices in the nearest towns. If purchasing the policy from the agents, a small agency fee will be applied.
In addition, any vehicle registered abroad entering the territory of Armenia will be subject to an environmental tax. Tax rate for light vehicles and motorcycles will be approximately 8.5 euros payable at the border. Payment shall be made in Armenian drams (AMD).
How to behave and cultural peculiarities of the region
Armenians do not tolerate defiant behavior, disrespectful attitude to elders, very open and vulgar clothing, excessive attention to others (especially women).
In public places, please refrain from speaking too loudly and using obscene language, drinking alcohol and pestering others.
We recommend exercising caution and respect for local traditions.
ASSISTANCE
If you require help or assistance, please do not hesitate to address to any local citizen. Armenians are very friendly and hospitable people and will try to help you with pleasure. Most of Armenians speak Russian or English, so no need to worry about “lost in translation” problem.
Which banking cards can be used in Armenia
“Visa”, “MasterCard”, “AmericanExpress” and JCB banking cards are accepted in Armenia, other than those issued by Russian banks. Banking cards “MIR” can be used only in “VTB Armenia” banking infrastructure.
